An important update from Bishop Kara concerning Title IV matters

December 20, 2024

Dear People of God in the Diocese of Rochester,

Today, a letter and documents will be made public concerning the grave allegations against our former bishop, Prince Singh, brought by his family and some members of our diocese. Because these allegations are against a bishop they fall under Title IV of our Constitution and Canons, and the matter is handled and paid for by The Episcopal Church under the authority of our Presiding Bishop, Sean Rowe. In consultation, the complainants, Prince, their advisors, and the Church’s Disciplinary Board have reached an accord. This accord is meant to fulfill the purpose of Title IV: “By virtue of baptism, all members of the church are called to holiness of life and accountability to one another,” which calls us to healing, repentance, forgiveness, restitution, justice, amendment of life, and reconciliation.

This accord calls for accountability from Prince Singh under the direction of Sean Rowe, including professional evaluation and treatment, as well as a reconciliation process which I will help shape with the complainants from our diocese. Our canons require various levels of transparency, which means that some documents are posted on the church’s website. These documents are now available with some redactions to protect injured persons, as permitted.

I have met with some of the complainants and will continue to be available to them, and to any of you who have concerns. You are welcome to make an appointment to talk or meet with me by calling my assistant, Sarah Herzog at 585.473.0903 or by email at sarah@episcopalrochester.org. Our provisional bishop, Stephen Lane, and Sean Rowe have included me in the process toward resolution, and their guidance has been invaluable, as has their compassion and concern for all involved.

This Sunday, we will pray:

“Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.”

Please keep this process of reconciliation and all involved in your prayers.

God's Blessings,
