Celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King called Local 1199 "my favorite union," addressing its Delegates just a few weeks before his death. Coretta Scott King became the Honorary Chairperson of Local 1199 shortly after and called on the union to leave New York City and organize health care workers across the nation. 1199 in Rochester is one product of that project. The union was started here in 1973 at UR's Strong Memorial Hospital. The workers began holding a Dr. King remembrance at URMC every year starting in 1981, initially on his birthday of January 15, and later on the national holiday.
