Bishop Stephen Lane on the mass murder in Buffalo

Gun violence is a pervasive reality across the United States. The recent mass murder in Buffalo brings that close to home, along with the knowledge that the murderer also considered Rochester as a target. The motivation, in this case, was hatred for people of color, America’s long history of racism being passed to a new generation. But truth be told, there are mass shootings nearly every day. This past weekend according to news reports, 21 people were killed in mass shootings across the country.

Since I last wrote to you, coronavirus has continued to surge across our region. I’ve had a visitation postponed, and several of the clergy of the diocese have been ill, one significantly. Let’s remember the most vulnerable among us, and let’s remain cautious and vigilant in our communities.

This month I want to continue raising thought questions for the Episcopal Transition Process.

Dear Friends in Christ Jesus,

As I write, Covid is once again surging in our region. In the last few days, priests of the diocese and a member of the staff have tested positive for the virus. I urge you all to be cautious about in-person meetings and encourage masking for public worship. I remind you that the common cup is not authorized yet, and I hope we will continue to keep the needs of the vulnerable at the forefront of our thinking as we go about our ministries. I am taking a break from in-person meetings for a couple of weeks.
