Medical Mission in Memory of a Beloved Local Doctor

For the seventh consecutive year, the legacy of Dr. Blanche Borzell was honored, as St. James’ Episcopal Church Warden Kate LaMoreaux and Treasurer John Terry presented a $6000 gift to the Friends of Bequia Hospital President Shaverne Ollivierre.  The Friends of Bequia Hospital, founded in 2013, continues to provide much-needed funds. This year’s gift is the result of a $5000 international grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, proceeds from St. James’ fundraising efforts, and memorial gifts from friends and family, honoring Dr. Borzell’s many years of service to the community.  Her death in 2018 left a void in the community and in the lives of her family and patients.

According to Ms. Ollivierre, the funds allow the hospital to request assistance from the Friends organization.  In fact, the hospital was able to order crucial medicine to treat heart conditions and diabetes, which is quite prevalent on the island. With the funds provided, patients are able to receive medications from the hospital following treatment, or treatment in the town center clinic in Hamilton, or from a clinic nestled among residences at Paget Farm on the far corner of the island. These three locations provide medicine to all, offered free of charge or at a cost of 10 EC (approximately $3).

Bequia is a 7-square-mile island just south of the capital island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, at 13 degrees north of the equator.  With a population of 5000 locals, the island’s population doubles during the tourist season. A Cuban-trained physician offers care at the hospital and clinics, as well as at her private office. This island paradise, with its sheltered harbor, is regularly visited by sailors, cruise ships, and tourists, many of whom have formed long-lasting ties with the lovely island and its kind, welcoming residents.  Humanitarian aid by private groups is essential since the U.S. has decreased aid throughout the world.
