International Women’s Day
By the grace of God, the International Women’s Day gathering at Ascension was both meaningful and successful. The theme “Connect to Elevate” deeply resonated with many women, inspiring them to connect the dots in their lives. We were blessed with an incredible turnout of nearly 90 women participants from different ethinicities, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the women who took part in this special event.
Women from diverse backgrounds—including Jewish, Tamil, Punjabi, Karen, Turkish, Afghan, Dominican, Latina, and American communities—came together in a spirit of unity and celebration. The gathering featured engaging icebreakers, creative crafts, vibrant cultural dances representing various ethnicities, and a delightful spread of traditional foods.
We were honored to listen to Bishop Kara Wagner Sherer’s keynote address virtually, encouraging women to build meaningful connections. A special appreciation goes to Meerrot, Kavitha, Felisa, Navjot, and Zahara for courageously sharing their personal journeys, as well as Dr. Johan for offering valuable medical insights.
We are immensely grateful to Angeline Priya for moderating the event; Debbie and Kate for leading the icebreakers and crafts; Caroline for facilitating the group discussions; and Alison, Nancy, and Patricia for managing registration and feedback. Mellisa and Sarah played a key role in organizing door prizes, adding a special touch to the gathering.
Rev. Annie Jones, representing the Diocese, led us in a heartfelt prayer before the meal. We sincerely appreciate the Diocese’s generous support, along with the contributions of those who sponsored gift baskets, food, and event arrangements.
A special note of gratitude goes to Mary Bikel, Father Abi, and Adrine for offering prayers, the invocation, and the welcome address. We also extend our thanks to Paul, Cathy, Ryan, Steve, Jerry, Nancy, Merridith, Nightingale, Andrea, Alfina, Paula Kae So, Dinesh Raj, and Angel for their dedication in serving food.
This program would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of the incredible women of Ascension and our dedicated volunteers. We deeply appreciate the support of the Diocese, vestry, wardens, and Rector. A special word of thanks to Fr. Greg and Mother Saundra Cordingley for gracing the event with their presence.
We also wish to acknowledge the invaluable support of different religious leaders, a few friends from Rochester City School District, Alcoholics Anonymous, Episcopal churches from the Geneseo Convention, the Rochester Punjabi Association, and the Tamil community of Greater Rochester.
Unfortunately, we missed two groups, the Jewish and Islamic women, during the photo session.
This event was a true testament to the power of unity, diversity, and shared purpose. Thank you to each and every person who contributed to making this gathering a resounding success!
