New Convocations and Deans – what does it mean?

December 4, 2024

Dear clergy colleagues,

Linked here is a list of our new convocations under the name of your new dean. Included in the list are parishes, missions, and chapels. Please think of the whole area of your convocation as your mission field!

Here is what you can expect from your dean

Your dean will reach out to you about the first meeting as a convocation and will work with you to choose a name for your convocation, decide the regularity, date, and times of meetings, and how you will use your district grants ($600 per parish/mission). I will attend convocation meetings at least twice a year, one of those including lay delegates if your convocation decides to gather with lay delegates and/or Diocesan Council members. You are welcome to elect a Warden of the Convocation if that is helpful to you.

Your dean will also reach out to meet with you one-on-one within the next year to get to know you and your parish. Please see your dean as a pastoral support person who is available to advise you on issues in your parish. My staff and I are also available to you for support, advice, and problem-solving; your dean, and others in your convocation may have better and quicker answers so try them first! I will meet with the Deans regularly and they will be a conduit to get information and resources to you and feedback to us. Deans will reach out to wardens in congregations that are without clergy and will welcome new clergy into the diocese and help them integrate into our diocese.

Our current deans will have updated letters of agreement for two years, in hopes of having time to try this new format and provide a smooth transition to whatever comes next. When a dean’s term is up, you the clergy will nominate colleagues and I will appoint a new dean from that list.

Linked here is an updated contact list for parishes. Please make sure this is correct and send any corrections to Steve Richards at steve@episcopalrochester.org.

Please remember that these new convocations are in a trial period. I hope for regular evaluation between you, your deans, diocesan staff, and myself as we work to make our structures serve us best.
